In 2017 the Elisabeth C. Miller Library participated in a digitization grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services awarded to the Biodiversity Heritage Library. 777 individual journal issues were scanned by the Internet Archive from 14 titles published by 4 organizations. Now the historic and recent issues of newsletters published by the Hardy Fern Foundation, Arboretum Foundation, Northwest Horticultural Society and the University of Washington Botanic Gardens are available for the world to read.

You won’t want to miss the 13th annual GARDEN LOVERS’ BOOK SALE of used books at the Center for Urban Horticulture.

The Northwest lost a pioneer in horticulture, native plants, and libraries on December 14, 2017, when Lyn Sauter passed. Born in Snoqualmie Falls, WA, she first earned a degree in Chemistry at Seattle University. She then met her husband, Hansjoerg Sauter, a German medical resident. They married and had four children. She then returned to the University of Washington where she earned a graduate degree in Library Science, a field she pursued for the rest of her life. 

Early in June I received an exciting message from the Arboretum’s School Age Programs Coordinator, Cait McHugh. Cait had a request: she’d like to send us the weekly themes for UW Botanic Gardens summer programs for pre-kindergarten, grades 1-3, and grades 4-6 and have librarians select and send a weekly care package of books to enrich their curriculum. Instructors would borrow the books about a week before the start of a new themed program, giving them time for lesson planning. 

The American Horticultural Society has announced the five winners of their 2017 Book Awards.  Read about these great new books and visit the Miller Library to check them out.
The seven-member award review committee consisted of horticulturists, garden book writers and publicists, and one horticultural librarian (me!) from across the country.  We met virtually and by conference call in January to review some 40 nominees – it was both an exciting and challenging project. 

The long-term success of an institution often resides in the vision, dexterity, intellect, ambition and intuitiveness of an individual. On February 22, 2017, Valerie Easton announced that she was no longer writing her weekly column in the Pacific NW Magazine, bringing her 25 year career there to an end. For me, it seems like Val only recently started as the Library Manager at the Elisabeth C.

Brian Thompson was recently appointed to the American Horticultural Society’s Book Award committee for a three-year term.  He will join six other horticultural professionals across the county, including UW Botanic Gardens alum Jenks Farmer, in reviewing and presenting awards to the authors and publishers of the best North American books on gardening from the last year.
Brian is the Manager and Curator of the Miller Library.
