Volunteer Schedule

The UW Farm welcomes UW students, staff and the general public to volunteer at our farm sites. As a student farm, our schedule revolves around the academic calendar and the seasons.

Important Details:

Each quarter the volunteer opportunities change. Be sure to check the schedule regularly to learn which of the three growing sites are actively hosting volunteer shifts.

ALL Volunteers must sign up before arriving for liability reasons and for communications and records. Please visit the Volunteering Sign Up Information page for details.

Schedule for June – December:

*Saturday Shift Locations:

• May 30th – McMahon Hall  Mercer Court
• June 6th – Center for Urban Horticulture
• June 13th – Mercer Court
• June 20th – Center for Urban Horticulture
• June 27th – Mercer Court
• July 4th – NO SHIFTS
• July 11th – Center for Urban Horticulture
• July 18th – Mercer Court
• July 25th – Center for Urban Horticulture
• August 1st – Mercer Court
• August 8th – Center for Urban Horticulture
• August 15th – Mercer Court
• August 22nd – Center for Urban Horticulture
• August 29th – Mercer Court
• September 5th – Center for Urban Horticulture
• September 12th – Mercer Court

Dates Volunteer shifts are cancelled:

June 12 – No afternoon shift due to Farm Graduation

June 19 – No shifts all day,  due to federal holiday, Juneteenth

July 3 and July 4th – No Shifts all day due to the federal holiday, Independence Day

August 10th – No afternoon shift due to a farm team field trip

September 8th – No shifts all day due to the federal holiday, Labor Day

September 17th – No shifts all day due to the annual Harvest Dinner fundraiser

October 2nd – No afternoon shift due to the Dawg Daze Pizza bake

Sign Up Forms:

• New volunteers are required to sign up by completing Steps 1 and 2 on our Sign-Up Page.
• Returning volunteers must complete Step 1 on our Sign-Up Page prior to their first shift of each quarter.
• All volunteer shifts are walk-on. After completing forms, just show up at the location and time specified on the schedule.
• All volunteers also complete an attendance form at the beginning of each shift after arriving.

Shift Readiness:

• Arrive within the first five minutes of a shift
• Wear closed-toed, sturdy shoes and thick, heavy socks depending on the weather.
• Bring a hat, snack, water bottle, and weather-resistant layers of clothing.
• Be prepared to work with the farm team in all weather conditions.

Active Growing Location Descriptions:

• Mercer Court (Mercer) – Planned Urban Farm, residential growing site between seven-story buildings and on the top of a parking garage
• Center for Urban Horticulture (CUH) – main Production Farm, full sun growing site on top of an old city dump (1916-1966), adjacent to Union Bay Natural Area
•  McMahon Hall – Rooftop Culinary Garden at a residential dorm – closed for volunteer shifts 2026
