Native Plant Nursery Internships

The UW student chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration’s (SER-UW) native plant nursery is located on campus at the Center for Urban Horticulture (CUH). It is a student run operation that provides plants to the on-campus restoration projects that SER-UW manages. This year, with the support of a Campus Sustainability Fund grant, the nursery is expanding by building a new hoop house, growing more plants from seed and cuttings, and increasing its opportunities for volunteer involvement.

My Experience in Garden Based Education by Cyrena Thibodeau

The Fiddleheads Forest School, recently featured in a New York Times article, is a nature pre-school that focuses on giving children the opportunity to learn and grow through outdoor exploration. The program is located at the Washington Park Arboretum, which is co-managed by UW and the Seattle Department of Parks. Part of the space used by the forest school includes a raised bed garden that is planted with annual vegetables.

Mother Earth Farm is an 8 acre food bank farm run by the Emergency Food Network. Located in the Puyallup River valley, the farm uses organic practices to grow about 100,000 pounds of fresh produce a year for Pierce County food banks and hot meal sites. Mostly focused on vegetables, Mother Earth also has an orchard, beehives, and a small herb and flower garden.

Professor Jennifer Ruesink is leading a one-credit Agro-ecology Reading Group in Winter 2016. This will be a weekly seminar in which students/staff/faculty read and discuss articles covering various aspects of agroecology.

Agroecology represents the interaction of farming with the environment, in which “environment” can be variously defined in terms of how much of the human environment is included.
