Around The Farm

Introducing UW Farm’s New Food Security Lead

Chrina Munn started September 1, 2022 as the farm’s new AmeriCorps Volunteer. She takes over from Dannette Lombert, who completed their 10-month contract in July. The focus of the position is food security with an emphasis on growing and distributing the farm’s produce, seeds, and plant starts to local food banks and pantries, and households and building relationships with other food access, equity and educational farms and gardens.

Chrina majored in Environmental Studies and graduated from the Program on the Environment in 2020. For her capstone project, Chrina worked with a kelp experiment on the Organic Farm School on Whidbey Island, where she first discovered sustainable agriculture.

After graduating, she worked at Viva Farms in Woodinville and completed the Practicum of Sustainable Agriculture certificate program. There she learned all about growing a variety of crops, and particularly loved learning how to grow carrots, tomatoes, and cucumbers. After the practicum, she went to Hawaii and participated in one of the farm listings offered by Worldwide Opportunities On Organic Farms, or WWOOF.  “WWOOF-ers” (a popular acronym) help out on sustainable farms around the globe. Chrina learned to farm some tropical fruits like guava, cacao, and pineapple. Chrina is passionate about sustainable agriculture and believes in land stewardship and teaching people about where their food comes from.

When not farming, Chrina loves to go rock climbing or hiking with friends. She loves to explore Seattle and find new places to eat.

This Week’s Recipe:

Salsa Verde Recipe

From Chef Savvy

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • ~1.5 pounds tomatillos husks removed
  • 1 jalapeno (optional)
  • 1/4 of a medium onion
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1/2 cup cilantro
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice

Steps to Make It

  1. Pan-roast the tomatillos, jalapeño, and onion: Firstly, add the olive oil, tomatillos, jalapeno, and onion to a large skillet. I sautéed the ingredients on high heat until caramelized on both sides, which took about 3-4 minutes.
  2. Blend! Next, transfer the pan-roasted ingredients to a blender (or you can use a food processor or hand blender) along with the garlic, cilantro, and lime juice. I blended it until it was combined. You may have to do this in two batches.
  3. Chill & serve: You can eat this salsa verde right away, or chill it in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve it.

Help The Farm Grow!

Every year, we have the capacity to grow more food and increase our educational and research program at the UW, but not without your support. Every contribution goes to work immediately, helping us better serve students. Your support can sustain our momentum and help seed new opportunities for student internships, academic work, and future growth. Please consider making a gift to the Farm online
