Creating User-Friendly Signage for Visitors at The UW Farm

Hi! My name is Olivia Johnson and I am a senior in Environmental Studies in the College of the Environment. I am the current education intern on the University Washington Farm. I train guides who then lead tours of the farm. Getting to know the farm firsthand, and learning an expert who is there on a regular basis, benefits students involved in classes focused on urban farming and related curriculums.

A big project I worked on last quarter was directional signage for our Mercer Court location of the UW farm. Many folks who come to volunteer with us often can’t find our Club House. The signage has arrows that point people in the direction of the club house from two different starting points. At the beginning of each starting point is a Welcome to the UW Farm sign in many different languages. We strive to make everyone feel included, safe, and heard at the UW Farm. Signage that is accessible to as many people as possible is our goal for the near future.

We are working to create permanent signage that will be educational so at all our locations people can walk through and do self-guided tours when a farm guide is not available. These signs will improve access for all, because they will be in multiple languages and have Braille.

These will be way finding signs that will help provide more information for people who are visiting the farm about what is currently happening, and how they can be involved.

Help The Farm Grow!

Every year, we have the capacity to grow more food and increase our educational and research program at the UW, but not without your support. Every contribution goes to work immediately, helping us better serve students. Your support can sustain our momentum and help seed new opportunities for student internships, academic work, and future growth. Please consider making a gift to the Farm online
