Around The Farm

By Lily Shen, UW Farm Informatics Intern, UW junior, majoring in Data Science

Hi! My name is Lily and I am a junior studying Data Science and Geography. Ever since I was a kid, I have always tried my best to be environmentally conscious. As I continued through college, I decided that I wanted to be even more so. I also feel like anything related to my career path requires me to be inside on a computer, constantly, which is not good for my mental health.

I wanted to be an intern at the UW Farm because I wanted to be outside with nature. In addition to field work, I am using my skills learned in my major to help create impact or annual reports. Each week I work with Perry, the Farm Manager and we review all the data and records for the last five years.

I will be creating visualizations, making the data easily accessible for the community and current and potential partners. By the end of the quarter I will complete the Annual Report for 2022!

I was inspired to write a haiku and look back on my time at the farm as winter comes to an end. This haiku comes from an experience I had clearing plots of winter cover crop to create space for future planting.

Food Access Resources

The UW Farm donates regularly to the UW Food Pantry. During peak season we also donate to nearby food banks. The links below are resources to help you or someone you know with food access.

Help The Farm Grow!

Every year, we have the capacity to grow more food and increase our educational and research program at the UW, but not without your support. Every contribution goes to work immediately, helping us better serve students. Your support can sustain our momentum and help seed new opportunities for student internships, academic work, and future growth. Please consider making a gift to the Farm online
