Selected Plants from the Pacific Connections Garden-New Zealand Forest
1) Corokia cotoneaster Wire-netting Bush

- The common name of this species of Corokia aptly describes its wiry branches and tangled growth form. Growing into a dense bush of 1-3 meters, it has small dark-green or bronze leaves.
- A native of New Zealand, C. cotoneaster is found in dry and stony places throughout its homeland, and is extremely tolerant of dry and exposed conditions.
- A member of the plant family Cornaceae, Corokia is a genus of four species of shrubs – three endemic to New Zealand. They all bear small star-like yellow flowers followed by orange, yellow or red berries.
2) Griselinia littoralis Broadleaf, Kapuka

- Broadleaf is found throughout most of New Zealand in forests from sea level to 900 meters. It grows 3-10 meters, forming an attractive dense bushy tree. The deep-green oval leaves are thick and very shiny.
- G. littoralis will grow in a wide range of conditions and is very good for shelter planting and coastal situations.
- Griselinia is a genus of seven species of trees and shrubs – five of which are native to South America and two are endemic to New Zealand.
3) Hoheria angustifolia Narrow-leaved Lacebark

- A member of the plant family Malvaceae, Hoheria contains five species of trees and all are endemic to New Zealand. The fibrous layer beneath the bark has a characteristically netted or lace-like appearance.
- Hoheria are fast growing trees and are generally tolerant of a wide range of conditions.
4) Phyllocladus alpinus Mountain Toatoa

- Phyllocladus is an interesting genus of five or six species of conifers found in Tasmania, Borneo, the Philippines and New Zealand. What appear to be leaves are in fact flattened extended green stems called phylloclades.
- The small male cones are red, making an attractive contrast with the foliage.
5) Sophora microphylla Kowhai

- S. microphylla has a somewhat tangled juvenile form before growing into a tree of about 3-7 meters. The foliage is fern-like with very tiny light-green leaflets paired along the leaf stem. Adult specimens bear bright yellow flowers.
