AmeriCorps volunteer Gretchen Rude is the Education Outreach Specialist for UW Botanic Gardens. She will be pioneering a youth leadership program over the summer that will aim to bring a diverse group of students to the Washington Park Arboretum. The program will build leadership and team working skills, as well as provide experience working in outdoor education.
Gretchen moved up to Seattle from Portland where she graduated from the University of Oregon. She majored in International Studies and minored in Biology. She has always loved Seattle and is thrilled to live and work in such a vibrant city.
Gretchen gardens at home and enjoys being able to walk into her backyard and pick her dinner. She says she loves breaking off a long piece of rhubarb for a nice, tart pie. In terms of plants, she’s currently interested in maidenhair ferns with their plastic-feeling black stems and dainty individual leaves.
Gretchen considers being a camp counselor to be her biggest hobby. She loves working with children and being their connection to the outdoors. She is an avid traveler and her favorite places to explore are botanical gardens and art museums.
