Thanks to spot on planning and recruitment by our partner, Arboretum Foundation, and cooperative PNW weather, two of our biggest community service events during the year were a huge success!
We celebrated United Way Day of Caring on September 15, when 130 volunteers representing 6 companies; Nordstrom, Sonos, Fred Hutch, Google, IMPINJ, Microsoft and Chase Bank, participated in 7 arboretum projects led by UW Botanic Gardens horticulture and Seattle Parks and Recreation staff. Over 50 yards of weeds, mostly blackberry, was removed encompassing over 20,000 square feet of planting bed space in some of our steepest and difficult to access terrain throughout the arboretum. Bravo! to all Day of Caring volunteers!
On September 25, UW Botanic Gardens and Arboretum Foundation, hosted Coach Metcalf’s entire UW Men’s/Women’s Cross Country and Track and Field teams (over 120 athletes) for an ivy pull in the Arboretum’s steep Pinetum (west) border. Over 30 yards of ivy, the “kudzu of the PNW”, was hauled out! Kudos from the UW Botanic Garden’s horticulture staff. It would have never been accomplished without you. The survival rings created around all the trees will protect them from the ivy scourge for at least another year, if not longer.
Here are several pics from the 2 events:
