Around The Farm

An Introduction to our Mary Gates Leadership Scholars:

This quarter we are excited to announce that two UW Students, who have volunteered with us regularly throughout their time at UW, applied and were accepted to be Mary Gates Leadership Scholars! They each will be working on a project on the Farm across two quarters. We would like to introduce them to the greater UW Farm community, as you all will be seeing a lot of them and their work for the rest of the growing season. Read their bios below, and keep an eye out for them on your next visit!

Oliver Norred

An Interaction Design Major, Oliver has been volunteering with the farm since Summer 2021. Under a Mary Gates Leadership Scholarship, he is designing and installing signage to improve wayfinding and education around the farm. Casual visitors who come to the farm with no prior knowledge may use these installations to learn about our facilities, food security, and urban farming in general. His focus is on installations that will reach a connect visitors to food resources, worms and composting, and a welcome sign that acknowledges history of place. His project will connect to our virtual learning library for information and deeper learning.

Julia Macray

Julia is a junior majoring in Earth and Space Science, with a minor in Climate Science. She grew up in Seattle, and graduated from Vashon Island High School.

Julia is most at home in the outdoors, and her love for the mountains and snow has translated into a deep concern and care for the environment, and a search for opportunities to mitigate climate change. Organic agriculture has been an important aspect of Julia’s life since she was a child, and a great way to create tangible positive environmental impacts. She has volunteered in community p-patches and gardens, spent a summer working on One Leaf Farm in Snohomish, WA, and volunteered on the UW Farm before coming into the Vermiculture Internship.

Julia plays the saxophone in the Husky Marching Band, and in her free time enjoys playing and listening to music, as well as exploring the mountains, swimming in alpine lakes, and biking around Seattle searching for the most delicious donut shops. She also works as a research assistant in the Sachs Oceanography Lab, studying changes in paleo-precipitation in tropical regions.

Food Access Resources

The UW Farm donates regularly to the UW Food Pantry. During peak season we also donate to nearby food banks. The links below are resources to help you or someone you know with food access.

Help The Farm Grow!

Every year, we have the capacity to grow more food and increase our educational and research program at the UW, but not without your support. Every contribution goes to work immediately, helping us better serve students. Your support can sustain our momentum and help seed new opportunities for student internships, academic work, and future growth. Please consider making a gift to the Farm online
