Leschi Elementary’s Peace Garden Needs Volunteers!

TeachingEver wanted to work with inner city, elementary school kids?  Do you want to teach kids the basic life skills of growing their own food?   Do you want to help kids connect more to their natural world?  If the answer is yes to all three questions, Leschi Elementary’s Peace Garden needs your excellent volunteer services!

Leschi Elementary is a Seattle Public School located in the Central District.  The school serves many low income families and over 50% of our students receive free and reduced lunch.  Teaching students how to grow their own food is not only a basic life skill but also connects them to nutritious, healthy living with the extra bonus of connecting them to their natural world.  Our garden has existed for close to three years and is run on volunteer power alone.  If you are looking to find ways to teach environmental science related topics to elementary school kids then this is the right opportunity for you.

Leschi is accessible by bus route 48 from UW or if you have a car, there’s plenty of parking in the neighborhood.  We seek volunteers willing to commit once or twice a week, one to two hours each day, to either teach or assist an outdoor educator with class sizes of 25 students or more, Kindergarten-5th.  If interested, please contact Kim Blakemore, parent volunteer garden coordinator, at kblakemo@uw.edu.
