November Staff Profile: Roy Farrow

Fern fiddleheads sprouting
Meet our November Staff Feature – Roy Farrow! Roy is the Washington Park Arboretum Grounds Supervisor. He’s responsible for the whole Arboretum, from guiding the horticulture staff to managing the various themed gardens throughout the park. After studying atmospheric chemistry and doing lab work on soil and water testing, Roy felt he needed a career shift that included more time in the field – so he started volunteering for the UW Botanic Gardens back in 2002 and never looked back.
Some of his favorite specific places to visit in the Arboretum are the Witt Winter Garden and Rhododendron Glen, but Roy especially loves the many species of ferns that grow throughout the Arboretum. Roy used to think he might transition to another kind of horticulture job, but he’s realized that there’s no next best thing to move on to. “There’s no other arboretum around – I love being a part of something that’s going to be here for another 100 years.”
