Rhododendron Glen Renovation Begins this Month

The next phase of the Rhododendron Glen restoration in the Arboretum is set to begin the week of August 16, 2022.  The long awaited enhancement of the creek from the upper pond to the Azalea Way Pond, complete with new planting beds and infrastructure, has been years in the planning and we are excited for this next phase.

The scope of the project will include:

  • Enhancement of the stream channel to a more naturalistic condition for increased habitat value and ecological function
  • Construction of an accessible pathway and seating at a new overlook, which will offer views of the lower pond and Azalea Way
  • Installation of new planting beds and an irrigation system
  • Planting of new rhododendron species and other members of the rhododendron family (Ericaceae).  Plantings will include species and varieties of Vaccinium (huckleberry), Gaultheria, Pieris (lily-of-the-valley shrub), Enkianthus, Kalmia (mountain laurel) and many others
  • Planting of small trees and companion shrubs and perennials to enhance the Arboretum’s internationally-recognized plant collections
  • Northwest native plant enhancements throughout the stream corridor

Major construction work will last up to two months, with planting continuing through fall.  During this time, there will be path closures in and around the Glen in the construction zone.  On Arboretum Drive, parking lots 5 and 6 will also be closed for construction-related activities. Nearby, alternate pathways will remain open.

We appreciate the generosity of Mary Ellen and Gordon Mulder in making the Rhododendron Glen Restoration Project possible, as well as funding from the Seattle Garden Club and other key supporters, including Arboretum managing partners.
