Internship Opportunity with SPU – Waste Reduction & Food Systems
Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) Customer Programs Division is seeking either an undergraduate or graduate intern to gain experience in community engagement programs within the Resource Conservation Section. This Section provides a wide range of conservation services to Seattle residents, businesses and community groups across SPU’s Solid Waste, Drinking Water, and Drainage and Wastewater utility lines of business. The selected intern will gain experience supporting education and community engagement programs focused on waste reduction, potentially including the following programs:
Residential food waste prevention: Help residents reduce the amount of edible food they throw away. Primary audiences include young adults, households with children, African American communities, and immigrant and refugee communities.
Commercial food waste prevention and recovery: Help food service businesses reduce the amount of edible food they throw away through food waste prevention strategies and donations. Support food banks and meal programs so they can accept more food donations.
Commercial food waste composting: Help food service businesses establish successful food waste collection programs for composting. Primary audience includes immigrant and refugee-owned restaurants and grocery stores.
Textile waste prevention, reuse and recycling: Help educate to shift residential customer behavior toward waste prevention, reuse and recycling of clothes and other textiles.
Product Stewardship: Coordinate with product manufacturers, retailers, businesses, government agencies, and other stakeholders to develop and implement policies that minimize the health and environmental impacts of a product and it’s packaging throughout the lifecycle stages.
