Fruits & Nuts appear in autumn

Sorbus americana
Sorbus americana

On one of our Free Weekend Walks recently this stunning beauty was showing off shamelessly amidst the Sorbus collection.  The Sorbus americana, or American Mountain Ash, is one of dozens of species of this genus in our collection;  the variety in fruits and leaf colors is stunning this time of year – an early introduction to fall.

The American Mountain Ash is native to the North American Continent from the Great Lakes region to NE Canada and parts of New England.  It is a small tree that can grow to about 40′.  The spring and summer foliage is green, but the tree turns an amazing golden color in early fall.

View these trees and more from collection plants bearing a variety of fruits, nuts, cones and seed pods during our autumn Free Weekend Walks.  Fruits & Nuts tours every Sunday at 1:00 pm through Oct. 12th.
