SR 520 Boater Restrictions
With warm weather upon us, we want to reminder you of the revised water access and navigation routes in and around Union Bay and Lake Washington during construction of the SR 520 Montlake Project. The map below shows the construction zone for work that will continue through 2023. Please stay 100 feet from construction activities.
Please note:
- The boating restrictions are active along the entire length of the construction zone and both sides of the bridge.
- Pay attention to signs posted at launch areas and within construction zones.
- Watch for changing conditions on the water.
- Always stay at least 100 feet away from construction activities.
- Remember that construction schedules are dynamic and subject to change.
- Safety is always our top priority.
Please contact sr520bridge@wsdot.wa.gov to be added to the distribution list for future boating notifications.
If you have additional questions you can always call the 24-hour hotline, 206-775-8885.
The Center for Urban Horticulture provides excellent wildlife viewing opportunities by foot and by boat. Trails in the Union Bay Natural Area and Yesler Swamp provide access to view the waters of Lake Washington and the many waterfowl that over-winter there. The small ponds within the Union Bay Natural Area are a good place to look for migrating shorebirds and the willows around the ponds are a good place to look for passerines. An osprey family nests on the platform at waters edge and the parents can be seen driving away bald eagles that nest in nearby cottonwoods. A kiosk at the east side of the Union Bay Natural Area provides a weekly highlights list of birds observed in the Natural Area.
While there are no landing places for boats along the waterfront at the Center for Urban Horticulture, the near shore waters are a great place for an afternoon paddle. There are a couple nearby boat rental facilities that rent canoes, kayaks and rowboats to the general public: the UW Waterfront Activities Center and Agua Verde Paddle Club.
