Greenhouse Assistant Position

The UW Biology Greenhouse is looking for an enthusiastic, plant-loving undergraduate greenhouse assistant to help with plant care!

General Duties/Description: Provide plant care support for UW Biology Greenhouse collections in Redmond and at the Center for Urban Horticulture.

* Irrigate, fertilize, weed, prepare soil mixes, prune, and perform general plant care for research and teaching functions

* Plant propagation by seed, cuttings, and division

* Clean greenhouse, equipment and adjoining plant growth areas, including sweeping, pot and flat washing, and power washing

* Assist in plant records collection, including inventory, labeling, and data entry

* Use of variety of hand tools including pruning shears, shovels, saws, and rakes

Requirements:

1. Course work in Plant Sciences, Botany, or Horticulture. Hands-on experience in greenhouse preferred, but not necessary.

2. Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this job, including heavy lifting and standing for long periods of time.

3. Valid drivers license for at least two years and completion of the UW Fleet Services Driver Safety Awareness Training upon hire in order to operate University vehicle.

4. Willingness to commute to Redmond and Center for Urban Horticulture.

5. Plant identification knowledge.

6. Ability to establish and maintain effective communications and working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the general public.

7. Must be a UW student.

Work Schedule/Shift: 9-15 hours/week. We provide 7 day per week care for the plant collection. Multiple shifts open, but must include a combination of the following: Mornings and/or one 8-hour day on M-F, weekends, holidays and academic breaks.

Rate: $13.00/hour
