Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The UW Botanic Gardens celebrate and honor the original stewards of this land. We acknowledge the history of colonialism and its continued impacts on Native communities. Today moves beyond the singular narrative of oppression. We honor the resilience of past, present, and future Native peoples. We will not only take today to learn more about the history of this land and the local Coast Salish tribes, but every day after in order to build a decolonized future. We hope you can join us in this day of celebration, education, and re-education. To learn more broadly about the history of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, read Illuminative’s Advocate’s Guide. Learn about our local Coast Salish tribes including the Muckleshoot, Suquamish, and Tulalip.
