2015 UW Farm Student Internships

Internship Title: UW Farm Intern (3 positions)
The goals of the UW Urban Farm are multiple:
  • Provide students with practical urban farming experience, from plan to production to table;
  • Link directly to academic programs in the study of food, including but not limited to: coursework, independent research, and capstone and culminating experiences;
  • Create a model of sustainable urban production at the UW;
  • Provide reliable, predictable, and quality produce for UW Housing & Food Services, CSA members, and other customers;
  • Provide produce for other uses including but not limited to events, fund-raisers, and gleaning;
Internship Description:
During the course of the 2015 growing season, student farm interns will learn and practice practical aspects of sustainable urban agriculture including: greenhouse work, transplanting, direct seeding, irrigation, pest/disease and weed control, harvesting, washing and marketing.
The UW Farm internship offers opportunities to work at three unique farm sites on campus, as well as opportunities for work specialties and project leadership.
Interns will help develop and deepen the production relationship with Housing and Food Services, CSA members, and other customers, as well as establish a strong relationship with UW Grounds Management.
This is an all-weather job. All UW Farm interns are expected to come to work on time and consistently, rain or shine. Commitment to the full three quarters is required. In the event of activities requiring supervision of minors, a criminal background check will be conducted by the University of Washington.
Interns will report to the Farm Manager, who will ensure that internship duties are aligned with the goals of the UW Farm.
Internship Goals:
Plant and tend farm plots at the Center for Urban Horticulture, Mercer Court, and the Botany Greenhouse;
  • Plan, harvest, and deliver for sales to UW Farm customers and partners;
  • Work with the Farm Manager to implement plant sales in the spring;
  • Work with UW Engineers Without Borders RSO to construct a wash-pack station and a cob oven gathering space at the Center for Urban Horticulture plot;
  • Work with the Office of Sustainability and Housing & Food Service Living Learning Community staff to develop outreach tools to inform incoming freshmen and returning upperclassmen about the UW Urban Farm.
Hours: 10 hours/week Spring and Fall Quarter, 30 hours/week Summer Quarter
Pay: $11/hour
Internship Start Date: 3/30/2015
Internship End Date: 12/11/2015
